Fans’ concerns intensified on the weekend of June 6 when entertainment source ScreenRant announced that filming for The Last of Us season 3 was allegedly canceled. The headline swiftly generated excitement among fans who dreaded the worst: that it indicated HBO was pulling away from season 3 and that the series was silently canceled. That is incorrect, as a third season of HBO’s zombie drama is still in the works.
Although season 2 didn’t receive as much acclaim as season 1, The Last of Us continues to perform well for HBO, and the network’s confidence in the franchise remains strong. HBO is diligently working on the third season, which will heavily center on Kaitlyn Dever’s character Abby, signifying a significant change for the franchise as it moves into season 3.
Season 3 has been in development for a number of months, starting in March, and there are still several months of filming left for the series. Interestingly, even though season 3 is moving forward as scheduled, production on the upcoming season has been halted, seemingly linked to a significant sporting event taking place this summer.

Although the cause of the production halt is not verified, it seems HBO opted to suspend filming for the series because Vancouver, where The Last of Us is produced, is a key host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will hold multiple matches this June.
Given that the World Cup matches are anticipated to attract significant numbers of people to the region, it seems logical for HBO to halt The Last of Us during this period. Ultimately, there’s a strong possibility that due to World Cup tourism, HBO could have faced challenges filming in specific locations and considered it a better option to temporarily halt production for several weeks.
It is quite typical for large productions to arrange breaks in their schedules for different reasons; occasionally these breaks are organized well in advance, and at other times they arise unexpectedly. It’s uncertain how long HBO may have scheduled this break, but filming is anticipated to start by the end of June, with The Last of Us season 3 still projected for release in 2027.
Hopefully, The Last of Us season 3 will premiere in the first quarter of 2027, coming between January and March, but there’s always a possibility that the third season may be postponed to Summer 2027. Regardless, we are confident that the season will be worth the anticipation whenever it comes!
